The Honorable William Hetzler has dedicated his life to strengthening the ties between Germany and the United States, making a lasting impact on civic life, business, and culture. For over forty years, he has been a passionate advocate for German-American causes, heritage, a respected advisor in government and industry, and a proud symbol of transatlantic friendship.

As General Chairman of the German-American Steuben Parade for 15 years, Mr. Hetzler transformed the event into a prominent celebration of German culture and pride. His leadership also included public service, where he served eight years as Assistant to New York Governor George Pataki for German Affairs, promoting cultural exchange and strengthening economic ties between Germany and New York State.

In 2004, Mr. Hetzler, together with notable Americans of German descent, established the German-American Hall of Fame (GAMHOF) to recognize the contributions of German immigrants and their descendants in shaping American society. What started with key inaugural events in Washington, D.C., and New York City has developed into a lasting institution that preserves and honors a shared heritage for future generations.

Born in Munich, Germany, Mr. Hetzler immigrated to the United States in 1957. Not long after arriving, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served as an interpreter with the legendary “Spearhead” Division, stationed in Germany alongside Elvis Presley. He proudly became a U.S. citizen in 1965. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to build successful businesses in food retail and the arts, including a notable SoHo gallery, before establishing them.

His outstanding contributions have been recognized with some of the highest awards on both sides of the Atlantic, including the Cross of the Order of Merit, First Class, from the Federal Republic of Germany, the Ellis Island Congressional Medal of Honor, and the Golden Medal of the German Bundesrat.

With his induction into the German-American Hall of Fame, William Hetzler is celebrated as a visionary whose work showcases the creativity, precision, and influence of German- Americans on American life.
